Interspecific competition underlying mutualistic networks
The architecture of bipartite networks linking two classes of constituents is
affected by the interactions within each class. For the bipartite networks
representing the mutualistic relationship between pollinating animals and
plants, it has been known that their degree distributions are broad but often
deviate from power-law form, more significantly for plants than animals. Here
we consider a model for the evolution of the mutualistic networks and find that
their topology is strongly dependent on the asymmetry and non-linearity of the
preferential selection of mutualistic partners. Real-world mutualistic networks
analyzed in the framework of the model show that a new animal species
determines its partners not only by their attractiveness but also as a result
of the competition with pre-existing animals, which leads to the
stretched-exponential degree distributions of plant species.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted version in PR
QuantumATK: An integrated platform of electronic and atomic-scale modelling tools
QuantumATK is an integrated set of atomic-scale modelling tools developed
since 2003 by professional software engineers in collaboration with academic
researchers. While different aspects and individual modules of the platform
have been previously presented, the purpose of this paper is to give a general
overview of the platform. The QuantumATK simulation engines enable
electronic-structure calculations using density functional theory or
tight-binding model Hamiltonians, and also offers bonded or reactive empirical
force fields in many different parametrizations. Density functional theory is
implemented using either a plane-wave basis or expansion of electronic states
in a linear combination of atomic orbitals. The platform includes a long list
of advanced modules, including Green's-function methods for electron transport
simulations and surface calculations, first-principles electron-phonon and
electron-photon couplings, simulation of atomic-scale heat transport, ion
dynamics, spintronics, optical properties of materials, static polarization,
and more. Seamless integration of the different simulation engines into a
common platform allows for easy combination of different simulation methods
into complex workflows. Besides giving a general overview and presenting a
number of implementation details not previously published, we also present four
different application examples. These are calculations of the phonon-limited
mobility of Cu, Ag and Au, electron transport in a gated 2D device, multi-model
simulation of lithium ion drift through a battery cathode in an external
electric field, and electronic-structure calculations of the

Severe steatohepatitis with hepatic decompensation resulting from malnutrition after pancreaticoduodenectomy
The most common finding related to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis is obesity, but a status of severe malnutrition can also induce the steatohepatitis. The authors report a rare case of steatohepatitis leading to hepatic decompensation caused by malnutrition after pancreaticoduodenectomy. A 68-year-old female patient who had been previously diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and had undergone pancreaticoduodenectomy 5 months previously presented with abdominal distension. Routine CT performed 3 months after the surgery revealed severe fatty liver without evidence of tumor recurrence. After undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomy her food intake had reduced, and as a result she had lost 7 kg of body weight over 2 months. At this admission, CT revealed moderate amounts of ascites without tumor recurrence. Furthermore, her albumin and lipid profile levels were markedly decreased, and she had a flapping tremor and slurred speech suggestive of hepatic encephalopathy. Her liver biopsy findings were consistent with steatohepatitis and disclosed macrovesicular steatosis without definite fibrosis. After careful nutritional control, her symptoms disappeared and her laboratory findings improved
A Pilot Study for the Neuroprotective Effect of Gongjin-dan on Transient Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion-Induced Ischemic Rat Brain
In this study, we investigated whether gongjin-dan improves functional recovery and has neuroprotective effects on reducing the infarct volume after transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAo). Infarct volume was measured using TTC staining and glucose utilization by F-18 FDG PET. Functional improvement was evaluated with the Rota-rod, treadmill, Garcia score test, and adhesive removal test. At 14 days after MCAo, neuronal cell survival, astrocytes expansion, and apoptosis were assessed by immunohistofluorescence staining in the peri-infarct region. Also, the expression of neurotrophic factors and inflammatory cytokines such as VEGF, BDNF, Cox-2, TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-1α was measured in ischemic hemisphere regions. The gongjin-dan-treated group showed both reduced infarct volume and increased glucose utilization. Behavior tests demonstrated a significant improvement compared to the control. Also in the gongjin-dan treated group, NeuN-positive cells were increased and number of astrocytes, microglia, and apoptotic cells was significantly decreased compared with the control group in the ischemic peri-infarct area. Furthermore, the expression of VEGF and BDNF was increased and level of Cox-2, TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-1α was decreased. These results suggest that gongjin-dan may improve functional outcome through the rapid restoration of metabolism and can be considered as a potential neuroprotective agent
Scaling of nestedness in complex networks
Nestedness characterizes the linkage pattern of networked systems, indicating
the likelihood that a node is linked to the nodes linked to the nodes with
larger degrees than it. Networks of mutualistic relationship between distinct
groups of species in ecological communities exhibit such nestedness, which is
known to support the network robustness. Despite such importance, quantitative
characteristics of nestedness is little understood. Here we take
graph-theoretic approach to derive the scaling properties of nestedness in
various model networks. Our results show how the heterogeneous connectivity
patterns enhance nestedness. Also we find that the nestedness of bipartite
networks depend sensitively on the fraction of different types of nodes,

Prevalence, Correlates, and Comorbidity of 12-Month Tobacco Dependence among Ever-smokers in South Korea, During 1984-2001
The rate of dependence among ever-users of a drug indicates the risk of developing dependence once an individual has been exposed to the drug. This is the first study to investigate 12-month tobacco dependence (TD) among ever-smokers in a community-based population. Analyses were based on two national studies of representative samples aged 18-64 in 1984 (n=5,025) and in 2001 (n=6,275), conducted with household visits and face-to-face interviews. The rates of 12-month TD among ever-smokers in men showed no significant difference between 51.6% in 1984 and 50.6% in 2001. On the contrary, the rates in women significantly increased from 33.3% in 1984 to 52.8% in 2001. After adjusting for the sociodemographic variables, 'male gender' was significantly associated with 12-month TD among ever-smokers in 1984, but not in 2001. 'Unmarried' was significantly associated in 2001 but not in 1984. 'Alcohol dependence' was the only psychiatric disorder associated with 12-month TD in both study years. In conclusion, 12-month TD was found in about 50% of ever-smokers, and gender differences between the rates of 12-month TD which was observed in 1984 disappeared in 2001. Individuals with 12-month TD showed higher comorbidity with alcohol dependence than ever-smokers without TD
Effectiveness of a village-based intervention for depression in community-dwelling older adults: a randomised feasibility study
Although a focus on late-life depression may help preventing suicide in older adults, many older people, especially those living in rural areas, have relatively low accessibility to treatment. This study examined the feasibility and effectiveness of a village-based intervention for depression targeting older adults living in rural areas.
A community-based randomised pilot trial was performed in two small rural villages in South Korea. Two villages were randomly selected and assigned to the intervention or active control group; all older adults living in the two villages (n = 451) were included in the intervention program or received standard Community Mental Health Service (CMHS) care, and the effectiveness of the program was examined using representative samples from both groups (n = 160). The 12-week intervention included case management according to individual risk level and group-based activities. Healthy residents living in the intervention village who played major roles in monitoring at-risk older individuals were supervised by CMHS staff. The score on the Korean version of the Geriatric Depression Scale-Short Form (SGDS-K) was the primary outcome, while social network, functional status, and global cognitive function were secondary outcomes. Linear mixed models including the factors of intervention group, time, and their interaction were used to examine group differences in changes in primary and secondary outcomes from baseline to follow up.
Overall, there was no significant group × time interaction with respect to the SGDS-K score, but older individuals with more depressive symptoms at baseline (SGDS-K ≥ 6) tended to have a lower likelihood of progressing to severe depression at post-intervention. The social network was strengthened in the intervention group, and there was a significant group × time interaction (F[df1, df2], 5.29 [1, 153], p = 0.023).
This study examined a 12-week village-based intervention for late-life depression in which the CMHS helped village-dwellers deal with late-life depression in their communities. Although the intervention improved social interactions among older adults, it did not reduce depressive symptoms. Further studies including more rural villages and long-term follow up are needed to confirm the effectiveness of this prevention program.
